Banking day

Statutory often defined by the instrument that relies on it

A day banks are open for the business a contract depends on.

Often confused with bank holiday trading day

A banking day is a day on which banks are open for general business in a named place. The term does the work in contracts, where an obligation falls due on a banking day and moves if it would otherwise land on one that is not.

It is usually defined by the instrument that uses it, and the definitions are not identical: some name a city, some name a currency's principal financial centre, and some name both because a payment needs each end open.

A day can be a banking day in one place and not another for the same transaction, which is why cross-border agreements name the places rather than the country.

Two days that show it

Each of these closes banks specifically, rather than closing everything โ€” the distinction that makes banking day a separate idea from working day.

Banking day vs bank holiday

A bank holiday is a named occasion on which banks close. A banking day is any day they are open โ€” the ordinary case, not the exception.

Banking day vs trading day

Banks and markets keep separate calendars and close on different days.
