A solar calendar of thirteen months, running seven to eight years behind the Gregorian.
The Ethiopian calendar has twelve months of thirty days and a thirteenth of five or six. It descends from the Egyptian and Coptic calendars and, because it dates the Annunciation differently, its year number runs seven to eight years behind the Gregorian.
It is not a liturgical survival: it is in civil use, and Ethiopian documents, contracts and public holidays are dated in it. A system converting Ethiopian dates has to handle both the month structure and the era offset, and getting only one right produces an answer that looks plausible.
Ethiopian Christmas falls on the Gregorian 7 January, the same day as Orthodox Christmas in the Julian reckoning โ the same date arrived at by two unrelated routes.
The same Gregorian day reached by two different calendars โ one Ethiopic, one Julian โ which is a coincidence of arithmetic rather than a shared rule.
